first impressions

from Rebekah and Tonya...

We stayed at a hotel near O'Hare airport in Chicago on Wednesday night. We had a VERY short 3-hour sleep before waking up to head to the airport at 4 AM. Here is a photo of us looking exhausted while we waited for our shuttle bus to come and pick us up. From left to right, our group is Laura Herrmann, me, Stephanie Massner, and Tonya Martin.

After a long day of traveling, we met Grant and Hannah at the airport in Guadalajara. We were all very excited to see them again and meet sweet Ivory Kaye for the first time, especially Aunt Laura!
She has continued to delight us with her squeals, occasionally keep us up at night along with the roosters and dogs! But she really is a delight, especially her cute smiles and coos:)

We had Thursday night church that night and then all fell into an exhausted sleep! On Friday we picked up Issa, a sister from church, so that we could go to the market 30 minutes away in Zamora. It was an authentic Mexican experience, full of people and motorcycles careening through the crowds, food, clothing, you name it. We picked up the food we would need for the week and looked around at all the sights. Here is all of us minus Hannah in the town square.

Saturday was busier- we spent the morning priming chairs for Grant and Hannah's future dining set. That evening Grant, Laura, Ivory, and Tonya took one of the vans to pick up kids from the surrounding countryside for Jovenes, a weekly outreach to the younger kids. After our first stop, we came across an older couple walking along the very, very bumpy road, full of cobblestones, mini ponds and dirt turned mud. Grant graciously asked them if they wanted a ride, and they did. They very carefully climbed up into the van, and we drove them about 2 miles to the road near their home. Don't ask how they were going to walk all that way by themselves! Just another opportunity to share the blessings of Christ:)

Later that evening, the young kids from church came over and we broke into teams to hand out invitations around town for VBS next week. Below is a picture of Tonya with our fearless group leaders, Bere and Fani. They were very giggly girls, and despite our language barrier we had tons of fun. It was amazing how they knew the streets - we even ran into several of Fani's cousins. The goal was to distribute all of our paper invitations before returning to Grant and Hannah's house. We were on the count down- only 5 more to go! We spotted several boys headed towards us - our prospective invitees! only to find out another group had already got to them! The kids did a great job, in outreach to the community, and we're looking forward to the fruits of that tomorrow morning at VBS!

Today (Sunday), we went to church and then out to eat with Marshall and Jan.
Afterwards, we had an intense game of volleyball with most of the families present. It was a great way to get to put faces and names together. Again, we had the Spanish/English language barrier, but laughter is universal. One highlight was when I brought out some bug spray - we girls have gotten bit up the past couple nights, and prevention is key! So out came the can of OFF, and we girls from Estados Unidos passed it around. "Estan fumigando!" they teased. - apparently they were getting smoked out by all the fumes:) oh well.

We have had a great few days. I think my favorite part has been just getting to hang out with Grant (who I - Rebekah - grew up with) and Hannah (who I lived with at ISU). It's hard to really spend time together when they are only home for a few weeks at a time, so we are all loving being with them. Evening games have become a nightly ritual that we are all enjoying.

Anyway, that's our trip to Ixtlan thus far! More updates to come!
