"for such a time as this"

Last night we spent some time together in the book of Esther. Her story gave us lots of things to talk about, especially surrounding themes of purpose, fear, and God's will. Mordecai's profound statement and question in Esther 4:14 especially struck us:

"For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"

He essentially says that God's will will be done. He had such a deep faith to know that regardless of the action Esther took, God's plan would be fulfilled. However, he does not stop there. He further presses Esther, stating that if she were not willing to speak up for the sake of her people, God would raise up someone else to deliver the Jews. But she would lose the blessing, and her own life. And above all: What if she had been placed where she was for such a time as this? What if her purpose on Earth was to bring deliverance to the Jewish people at this time and place. What if she refused to be used in the way that God had created her to be used? For us, we ask ourselves, "What if we refuse to be used?" What if our purpose on Earth is to share the Gospel with just one person in Mexico?

We were in Forrest on Sunday at Matt & Kim's for a Round Robin Kids get-together. On Sunday morning, Bro. Arlen Leman spoke about Esther 8. After he finished reading, he stated "the obedience of one affected the lives of many".

Esther is such an inspiration to me. As a woman, and not having been married very long, it is easy to become confused about my role in God's kingdom. It would seem that Esther understood submission very well. She was in complete service to her heavenly Father and loved her husband and her people. I can learn so much from her! Although I/we have many fears about going to Mexico, we believe it is God's will and that His perfect plan surpasses all fear. He provided in mighty ways for Esther, and we believe He will do no less for us!

On another note, yesterday was our one-year anniversary. Everyone else says it's gone so fast... I think it's been such a long year!  It has been the most wonderful year of our lives, but there have been many changes, and I think that contributes to the feeling of having been married for much longer! :) We thoroughly enjoyed a weekend at TimberCreek Bed & Breakfast, remembering a year ago when we took wedding pictures and had our rehearsal dinner there. God has been so faithful!

As we begin a new year, both in life and in our marriage, I think of the amount of love and the many blessings that we have been showered with this year. We feel so undeserving. May God richly bless each of you, and may we all continue to press on toward heaven, together!
